Why he is called Maryada Purushottama
[Traditional account]
Rama is "the best of persons who keeps every bound of dharma" — the ideal son, brother, husband and king. Valmiki begins the epic by asking the sage Narada whether such a person exists in the world; Narada tells him of Rama.
