What is Manglik Dosha? A chart is called Manglik when Mars sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, and South Indian practice usually counts the 2nd too. It often cancels, and it doesn’t mean a marriage will fail.
What it is
A chart is called Manglik when Mars sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. South Indian practice usually counts the 2nd house too. Some astrologers check from the Lagna only, others from the Moon and Venus as well, so two astrologers can read the same chart differently.
When it cancels
Tradition lists many exceptions. These are the ones most often used:
- Both partners are Manglik
- Mars is in its own sign (Mesha, Vrishchika) or exalted (Makara)
- Jupiter aspects Mars or the 7th house
- The couple’s charts match well on the other factors
What families do
If the dosha stands, the usual remedies are a Mangal Dosh Puja, a symbolic first marriage (Kumbh Vivah, or Kadali or Arka Vivaham), and Hanuman worship on Tuesdays. Ujjain’s Mangalnath temple is the best known place for this puja.

Questions devotees ask us
Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?
Yes, many do. Astrologers look at whether the dosha cancels in either chart, and at the match as a whole.
Does Manglik Dosha end at 28?
Many people believe so, but it isn’t a universal rule. Ask a pandit to read your own chart.
How do I know if I’m Manglik?
You need your date, time and place of birth. A pandit can read it from your chart on a call.
