What is Pitru Dosh? It’s the tradition’s name for a debt to one’s ancestors, often linked to rites left undone. Families answer it with shraddha, tarpanam and pind daan.
What it is
Hindu tradition holds that each person owes three debts, and one is to the ancestors (pitru rin). When rites for a departed relative were missed, or a family lost track of them, tradition speaks of Pitru Dosh. In a chart, astrologers usually look at the 9th house and at the Sun or Moon joined with Rahu.
What families do
- Shraddham every year on the tithi of passing
- Tarpanam on Amavasya, especially Mahalaya Amavasya
- Pind daan at Gaya, Prayagraj or Haridwar
- Tripindi Shraddha when several generations have been missed
The rite matters less than the remembering. Feeding someone and giving in an ancestor’s name are part of it too.
