What is Tripindi Shraddha?

Where annual shraddhas have not been done for many years, or a family faces repeated obstacles that the horoscope links to pitru dosha, the shastras prescribe Tripindi Shraddha. Three pindas — of barley, rice and sesame — are offered to Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra on behalf of the unknown ancestors.

It is done in Pitru Paksha, on Amavasya, or on a day fixed by the pandit, and is often combined with Narayan bali or Nagbali at the teerthas.

About this puja

Tripindi shraddha is offered for ancestors of the last three generations whose rites were missed or who died untimely — three pindas, to Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra. Pandits suggest it when a family faces repeated trouble linked to pitru dosha, or when yearly shraddhas lapsed for many years.

It is often done at Gokarna, Trimbakeshwar, Gaya or Kashi, and can be done at home too.
