What Akshaya Tritiya means
An abujh muhurat
No separate muhurat is needed: weddings, griha pravesh, bhoomi puja and business openings are held all day.
Give water
In the peak of summer, gifts of water pots, fans, umbrellas, curd rice and buttermilk are the classic daana.
Gold
Buying gold or silver is a modern custom of the old idea — something that does not perish, bought on a day that does not diminish.
Sudama’s handful of rice
Who is in it: Sudama, Sri Krishna, Rukmini
Sudama, Krishna’s friend from Sandipani’s ashram, lived in great poverty. His wife urged him to visit Krishna, now king of Dwaraka.
Too shy to ask for anything, Sudama carried only a little beaten rice tied in a cloth.
Krishna ran to welcome him, washed his feet, and seeing the bundle, ate the rice with delight.
Sudama left without asking for anything. When he reached home, his hut had become a palace and his family wanted for nothing.
What it teaches: A gift given with love, however small, returns without end.
