Ugadi, on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, opens the new year in the Kannada lunar calendar. The day begins with an oil bath and mango-leaf torans, the family tastes bevu-bella — neem and jaggery — and in the evening listens to the panchanga for the year ahead. This year: Wednesday, 7 April 2027. Timings are worked out for Bengaluru.

What Ugadi means

Bevu-bella

Neem and jaggery eaten together: bitter and sweet, the two sides of the year to come, taken in one mouthful and with an even mind.

Panchanga shravana

In the evening a pandit reads the new year’s panchanga — the year’s name, its rulers, the rains and harvests, and what each rashi can expect.

A day good on its own

Ugadi is one of the three and a half muhurtas of the year. Families begin new work, enter new homes and buy gold without searching for a muhurta.

Brahma begins the world

Who is in it: Brahma, Vishnu

Before the world, the Puranas say, there was only water and Vishnu asleep on it. From his navel rose a lotus, and on the lotus sat Brahma.

Brahma meditated and, on the first day of the bright half of Chaitra, began to create — space, time, the worlds and every living thing.

So the day is the yuga-adi, the beginning of an age — Ugadi.

What it teaches: Every year is a new creation. Begin it with both the bitter and the sweet in hand.

Ugadi puja at home, step by step

Getting ready

  1. 1Clean the house; tie mango-leaf and neem torans at the door.
  2. 2Draw rangoli at the entrance.
  3. 3Prepare bevu-bella: neem flowers, jaggery, tamarind, a pinch of salt, and raw mango.

The puja

  1. 1Take an oil bath and wear new clothes.
  2. 2Worship the family deity and Ganapati with flowers, lamps and naivedya.
  3. 3Offer bevu-bella to the deity, then give some to everyone, saying the Ugadi shloka.
  4. 4Offer the festive meal as naivedya — obbattu (holige), payasa, chitranna.

Closing the puja

  1. 1Visit elders for blessings.
  2. 2In the evening, listen to panchanga shravana — at home, at a temple or online.

Ugadi from region to region

Bevu-bella, holige and panchanga shravana; in North Karnataka the day is also called Yugadi.

Maharashtra

Gudi Padwa — a gudi (a pole with silk and a pot) raised at every house.

Have the Ugadi puja done for you

Two ways to do it. At a temple: the pandit takes your family’s name and gotra in the sankalpa and sends you the photos and video. At home: a pandit from our panel comes to you with the vidhi, and you sit for the puja yourself.

Where this comes from

  • Brahma Purana tradition for creation beginning on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada.
  • Karnataka chandramana panchanga practice for Ugadi.
  • The nimba shloka as recited in Karnataka homes.

How we work out the dates: Stuti Mandir’s own panchanga engine places the Sun and Moon (Lahiri ayanamsa) and checks the tithi against sunrise, sunset and moonrise in Bengaluru, in IST. A printed panchanga may differ by a minute or so. Where your family’s panchanga or your purohita says otherwise, go with them.

Questions devotees ask us

When is Ugadi 2027?

Wednesday, 7 April 2027. In Bengaluru, Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (amanta; Chaitra Shukla Pratipada in the North Indian count) begins Wed, 7 Apr, 05:21 AM and ends Thu, 8 Apr, 04:29 AM IST.

Will Mysuru and Delhi keep Ugadi on the same day?

Mostly yes. But the sun rises and sets at different times in different towns, and a habba is kept on the day its tithi is running at the right hour — so timings shift, and once in a while the date does too. Change the town above to see yours.

Is Ugadi the same as Tamil Puthandu?

No. Ugadi follows the Moon (Chaitra Shukla Pratipada). Puthandu and Vishu follow the Sun’s entry into Mesha, in mid-April.

What is the new year called?

Each year has a name from the sixty-year cycle of samvatsaras; our panchanga page shows the current one.
