What Gowri Habba means

Daughter come home

Gowri visits her tavaru mane (mother’s house) like any married daughter. Brothers send their sisters money or a gift — the Gowri habbada mangala dravya.

Baagina

A winnow or tray holding arishina, kumkuma, bangles, a comb, a mirror, black beads, a blouse piece, rice, dal, jaggery and a coconut is given to five married women, and one to Gowri herself.

Sixteen knots

Married women tie a yellow thread with sixteen knots — the Gowri dara — after the puje, for the year.

Parvati wins Shiva

Who is in it: Parvati (Gowri), Shiva, Himavan, her father, Her friends

Parvati, daughter of Himavan, had decided since childhood that she would marry only Shiva.

When her father arranged to give her to Vishnu, her friends carried her away into the forest — this is why North India calls the day Hartalika, “carried off by friends”.

There she made a Shiva linga of sand and kept a fast and vigil on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya.

Shiva was moved and accepted her. Women keep the vrata on this day for the same steady blessing in their own marriages.

What it teaches: Steady devotion wins what force cannot. Choose with your heart and hold to it.

Gowri Habba puja at home, step by step

Getting ready

  1. 1Clean the house and set up a mandapa with banana stems and mango leaves.
  2. 2Keep the Gowri idol (or a kalasha with a face of Gowri), the sixteen-knot threads and the baagina trays ready.

The puja

  1. 1Bathe and take the sankalpa.
  2. 2Install Gowri on a bed of rice, and do a short Ganapati puje.
  3. 3Worship Gowri with the sixteen offerings — water, cloth, ornaments, arishina, kumkuma, flowers, lamp, naivedya and more.
  4. 4Worship the sixteen-knot threads before her, then tie one on your right wrist.
  5. 5Offer the first baagina to Gowri, then give baagina to five married women with tamboola.

Closing the puja

  1. 1Share the naivedya — holige, payasa, kosambari.
  2. 2Leave Gowri in place for Ganesha’s arrival tomorrow; both are sent off together.

Keeping the Gowri Habba fast

The day before

  • A sattvic meal the night before.

On the fasting day

  • Many women fast until the puje is complete.

Ending the fast

  • Eat the naivedya after the baagina has been given.

If a full fast is not right for your health, phalahara (fruit and milk) or a single meal keeps the vrata just as truly. Ask your elders or our pandit.

Good practice, and what to avoid

Please do

  • Give baagina to five married women with love.
  • Tie the sixteen-knot thread after the puje.
  • Call your sisters — or send them something.

Best avoided

  • Send anyone away without tamboola on this day.
  • Rush the puje to get to Ganesha preparations.

Karnataka

Baagina, the sixteen-knot thread, and Gowri seated with Ganesha the next day.

Andhra and Telangana

Gowri is worshipped alongside Vinayaka Chavithi; some keep Swarna Gowri vratam.

North India

Hartalika Teej — a waterless fast and night vigil with a sand linga.

Have the Gowri Habba puja done for you

Two ways to do it. At a temple: the pandit takes your family’s name and gotra in the sankalpa and sends you the photos and video. At home: a pandit from our panel comes to you with the vidhi, and you sit for the puja yourself.

Where this comes from

  • Swarna Gowri vrata kalpa as used in Karnataka.
  • Bhavishya Purana tradition for Hartalika Tritiya.
  • Karnataka household practice of baagina.

How we work out the dates: Stuti Mandir’s own panchanga engine places the Sun and Moon (Lahiri ayanamsa) and checks the tithi against sunrise, sunset and moonrise in Bengaluru, in IST. A printed panchanga may differ by a minute or so. Where your family’s panchanga or your purohita says otherwise, go with them.

Questions devotees ask us

When is Gowri Habba 2027?

Friday, 3 September 2027. In Bengaluru, Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya (amanta; Bhadrapad Shukla Tritiya in the North Indian count) begins Thu, 2 Sep, 04:50 PM and ends Fri, 3 Sep, 02:19 PM IST.

Will Mysuru and Delhi keep Gowri Habba on the same day?

Mostly yes. But the sun rises and sets at different times in different towns, and a habba is kept on the day its tithi is running at the right hour — so timings shift, and once in a while the date does too. Change the town above to see yours.

Can unmarried girls keep Gowri habba?

Yes. Unmarried girls often join the puje and receive baagina; many keep it praying for a good husband.

Can I book Swarna Gowri vrata at home?

Yes — a Stuti Mandir pandit can conduct the Swarna Gowri vrata with the full kalpa.
