Gowri is believed to come home to her parents’ house on Tritiya, and her son Ganesha follows the next day to take her back. Families install a Gowri idol or a kalasha with turmeric Gowri, and women tie the sacred thread (gowri dara) with sixteen knots on their wrists.
At the end of the pooja, married women of the family receive bagina — a winnowing basket of turmeric, kumkum, bangles, black beads, a blouse piece, coconut, rice, dal and jaggery — offered to Gowri first and then given with blessings.
