ನಾಗರ ಪಂಚಮಿ · नाग पंचमी

On Shravana Shukla Panchami, Karnataka worships the Nagas at anthills and stone nagakallu with milk, turmeric and flowers. It is also a sisters’ habba — sisters pray for their brothers — and in North Karnataka, swings go up and the house smells of tambittu and ellu unde. This year: Friday, 6 August 2027. Timings are worked out for Bengaluru.

What Nagara Panchami means

Nagas and the land

In Tulunadu and Malenadu, many families keep a nagabana — a sacred grove for the Nagas — and Panchami is its most important day.

A sisters’ habba

In much of Karnataka, Nagara Panchami is when sisters pray for their brothers. Married daughters come home, and brothers bring them gifts.

Swings and sweets

In North Karnataka, swings (jokali) are hung from trees; women sing Panchami songs; tambittu, chigali and ellu unde are made.

The farmer and the snakelings

Who is in it: A farmer and his family, His married daughter, The mother snake

A farmer ploughing his field cut through a snake’s nest and killed her young without knowing it.

The mother snake, in grief and anger, bit the farmer and his family that night.

His married daughter, far away, was worshipping the Nagas that day with milk and turmeric. The snake came to her too — but found her in prayer.

Moved, the snake listened to her plea for forgiveness and restored her family. Since then, it is told, no one ploughs or digs on Nagara Panchami, and sisters pray to the Nagas for their brothers.

What it teaches: Harm done without knowing is still harm. Forgiveness can be asked for — and given.

Have the Nagara Panchami puja done for you

Two ways to do it. At a temple: the pandit takes your family’s name and gotra in the sankalpa and sends you the photos and video. At home: a pandit from our panel comes to you with the vidhi, and you sit for the puja yourself.

Where this comes from

  • Bhavishya Purana for Naga Panchami worship.
  • Mahabharata for the names of the great Nagas.
  • Folk tradition of Karnataka for the farmer’s story and the sisters’ habba.

How we work out the dates: Stuti Mandir’s own panchanga engine places the Sun and Moon (Lahiri ayanamsa) and checks the tithi against sunrise, sunset and moonrise in Bengaluru, in IST. A printed panchanga may differ by a minute or so. Where your family’s panchanga or your purohita says otherwise, go with them.

Questions devotees ask us

When is Nagara Panchami 2027?

Friday, 6 August 2027. In Bengaluru, Sravana Shukla Panchami (amanta; Shravan Shukla Panchami in the North Indian count) begins Fri, 6 Aug, 02:28 AM and ends Sat, 7 Aug, 12:23 AM IST.

Will Mysuru and Delhi keep Nagara Panchami on the same day?

Mostly yes. But the sun rises and sets at different times in different towns, and a habba is kept on the day its tithi is running at the right hour — so timings shift, and once in a while the date does too. Change the town above to see yours.

Is Nagara Panchami linked to Subramanya Shashti?

Yes, in Karnataka both honour the Nagas; Subramanya Shashti in Margashira is the greater of the two at Kukke.
