What Ganesha Chaturthi means

The first god

Every puje in every home starts with Ganesha. On his own day he is the only guest.

Do not see the moon

The Moon laughed at Ganesha and was cursed; anyone who sees the moon on Chaturthi night may be falsely accused. Krishna himself was blamed for stealing the Syamantaka gem after seeing it.

Clay goes back to water

Karnataka has moved strongly to clay Ganeshas. The idol is dissolved in a bucket or tank at home, and the clay returns to the garden.

Ganesha and the Moon

Who is in it: Sri Ganesha, Chandra, the Moon, Sri Krishna, Satrajit and the Syamantaka gem

Ganesha was out late on his birthday, full of the modakas devotees had offered. His mouse stumbled at a snake, Ganesha fell, and his belly burst. He tied it up with the snake.

The Moon saw it and laughed. Ganesha cursed him: whoever looked at the moon on this night would be blamed for something they had not done.

Krishna once saw the moon on Chaturthi. Soon after, Satrajit’s Syamantaka gem went missing and Krishna was accused. He had to go into a bear’s cave and fight Jambavan to bring it back and clear his name.

That is why the moon is avoided on this night — and why, if you see it by mistake, you recite the Syamantaka shloka.

What it teaches: Laughing at another’s misfortune costs more than it seems. Patience clears a false name.

Getting ready

  1. 1Bring home a clay Ganesha the day before, or on the morning itself.
  2. 2Prepare a mandapa with banana stems, mango leaves and flowers.
  3. 3Collect the 21 kinds of leaves (patre) and make modaka or kadubu.

The puja

  1. 1At midday (Madhyahna), take the sankalpa and install Ganesha on a peetha with rice beneath.
  2. 2Invoke him — prana pratishthe — and offer the sixteen upacharas.
  3. 3Offer the 21 leaves one by one with his names, and 21 durva blades.
  4. 4Offer 21 modaka or kadubu, panchakajjaya and fruit.
  5. 5Do aarati and say Vakratunda mahakaya.

Closing the puja

  1. 1Do aarati morning and evening for as long as Ganesha stays.
  2. 2On the day of visarjane, do a final puje, move him slightly, and immerse him in a bucket or tank.
  3. 3Use the dissolved clay in your garden.

Ganesha Chaturthi from region to region

Bengaluru

Neighbourhood pandals, the Basavanagudi Ganesha utsava, music concerts through the fortnight, and clay idols at home.

Coastal Karnataka

Sarvajanika Ganeshotsava in temples and towns, with yakshagana nights.

Maharashtra

Ten days ending on Anant Chaturdashi with large processions.

Have the Ganesha Chaturthi puja done for you

Two ways to do it. At a temple: the pandit takes your family’s name and gotra in the sankalpa and sends you the photos and video. At home: a pandit from our panel comes to you with the vidhi, and you sit for the puja yourself.

Where this comes from

  • Mudgala and Ganesha Purana for Ganesha’s birth and worship.
  • Bhagavata Purana, Skandha 10, chapter 56, for the Syamantaka gem.
  • Karnataka practice for patre puje and panchakajjaya.

How we work out the dates: Stuti Mandir’s own panchanga engine places the Sun and Moon (Lahiri ayanamsa) and checks the tithi against sunrise, sunset and moonrise in Bengaluru, in IST. A printed panchanga may differ by a minute or so. Where your family’s panchanga or your purohita says otherwise, go with them.

Questions devotees ask us

When is Ganesha Chaturthi 2027?

Saturday, 4 September 2027. In Bengaluru, Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi (amanta; Bhadrapad Shukla Chaturthi in the North Indian count) begins Fri, 3 Sep, 02:19 PM and ends Sat, 4 Sep, 12:26 PM IST.

Will Mysuru and Delhi keep Ganesha Chaturthi on the same day?

Mostly yes. But the sun rises and sets at different times in different towns, and a habba is kept on the day its tithi is running at the right hour — so timings shift, and once in a while the date does too. Change the town above to see yours.

What time should Ganesha be installed?

At midday (Madhyahna) while Chaturthi is running. The window is in the table above for your town.

What if I see the moon by mistake?

Say the Syamantaka shloka given above, or listen to the Syamantaka story. That is the traditional remedy.
