What Guru Purnima means

Vyasa

Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa divided the Veda into four, composed the Mahabharata and, by tradition, the Puranas — the guru of gurus.

Chaturmasya begins

Sannyasis stop travelling and stay in one place for the rains, beginning with Vyasa puja on this day — as in the Sringeri, Udupi and other mathas.

Vyasa divides the Veda

Who is in it: Veda Vyasa, Paila, Vaishampayana, Jaimini and Sumantu

Vyasa, son of Parashara and Satyavati, was born on an island in the Yamuna on Ashadha Purnima.

He saw that in the Kali age memory and strength would decline, and no one could learn the whole Veda.

So he divided it into four — Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva — and taught each to one disciple, who passed it on.

For those who could not study the Veda, he composed the Mahabharata, the “fifth Veda”.

What it teaches: A guru arranges knowledge so that it can reach everyone.

Have the Guru Purnima puja done for you

Two ways to do it. At a temple: the pandit takes your family’s name and gotra in the sankalpa and sends you the photos and video. At home: a pandit from our panel comes to you with the vidhi, and you sit for the puja yourself.

    Where this comes from

    • Vishnu Purana and Mahabharata, Adi Parva, for Vyasa.

How we work out the dates: Stuti Mandir’s own panchanga engine places the Sun and Moon (Lahiri ayanamsa) and checks the tithi against sunrise, sunset and moonrise in Bengaluru, in IST. A printed panchanga may differ by a minute or so. Where your family’s panchanga or your purohita says otherwise, go with them.
