Raksha Bandhan 2027 — date and timings, puja steps and the story

रक्षा बंधन · राखी · ರಕ್ಷಾ ಬಂಧನ · రాఖీ పౌర్ణమి

On Shravana Purnima sisters tie a rakhi on their brothers’ wrists and pray for them; brothers promise to protect them. The same day is Upakarma (Avani Avittam), when Brahmins change the sacred thread, and Narali Purnima on the Konkan coast. This year: Tuesday, 17 August 2027. Timings are worked out for Delhi.

Why do families keep it? Indrani tied a raksha on Indra’s wrist before his battle; Draupadi tore her sari to bind Krishna’s cut finger, and he protected her ever after.

What happens on the day? The sister does tilak and aarti, ties the rakhi and offers sweets; the brother gives a gift and his promise.

What Raksha Bandhan means

Avoid Bhadra

Rakhi is tied while Purnima runs but never during Bhadra (Vishti karana), the first half of the Purnima. Aparahna, the afternoon, is preferred when Bhadra is over by then; when Bhadra covers the whole first evening, rakhi is tied the next morning before Purnima ends — which is how the date above is chosen. Check the Bhadra end time in your panchang or with your pandit.

Upakarma

Rig, Yajur and Sama Vedi Brahmins renew their yajnopavita and begin Vedic study again — Avani Avittam in Tamil Nadu, Jandhyala Pournami in the Telugu states.

Narali Purnima

Fishing communities of Maharashtra and Goa offer coconuts to the sea as the monsoon eases.

Draupadi’s sari and Krishna’s promise

Who is in it: Sri Krishna, Draupadi

After Krishna killed Shishupala with the Sudarshana chakra at the Rajasuya, his finger was cut and bleeding.

Draupadi, without a thought, tore a strip from her silk sari and tied it around his finger.

Krishna said he would repay her for every thread of it.

Years later, when Dushasana tried to disrobe her in the court of Hastinapura, Krishna kept her sari endless.

What it teaches: A thread tied with love binds a promise.

Upakarma / Avani Avittam: new sacred thread and Gayatri japa the next day.

    Narali Purnima on the coast.

Have the Raksha Bandhan puja done for you

Two ways to do it. At a temple: the pandit takes your family’s name and gotra in the sankalpa and sends you the photos and video. At home: a pandit from our panel comes to you with the vidhi, and you sit for the puja yourself.

    Where this comes from

    • Bhavishya Purana for Indrani’s raksha.
    • Mahabharata, Sabha Parva.

How we work out the dates: Stuti Mandir’s own panchanga engine places the Sun and Moon (Lahiri ayanamsa) and checks the tithi against sunrise, sunset and moonrise in Delhi, in IST. A printed panchanga may differ by a minute or so. Where your family’s panchanga or your purohita says otherwise, go with them.

    Questions devotees ask us

    When is Raksha Bandhan 2027?

Tuesday, 17 August 2027. In Delhi, Sravana Purnima (amanta; Shravan Purnima in the North Indian count) begins Mon, 16 Aug, 10:29 AM and ends Tue, 17 Aug, 12:59 PM IST.

Will Mysuru and Delhi keep Raksha Bandhan on the same day?

Mostly yes. But the sun rises and sets at different times in different towns, and a habba is kept on the day its tithi is running at the right hour — so timings shift, and once in a while the date does too. Change the town above to see yours.

What is the right time to tie a rakhi?

Any time on the day shown while Purnima is still running and Bhadra is over — the afternoon (Aparahna) if Purnima lasts that long, otherwise the morning. The table shows when Purnima ends in your town; check Bhadra’s end in your panchang.

Can I book a pandit for Upakarma (Avani Avittam)?

Yes — WhatsApp Stuti Mandir to book a pandit for Upakarma at home.
