What Varamahalakshmi Vrata means
Ashta Lakshmi
Varamahalakshmi stands for all eight Lakshmis — wealth, grain, courage, children, success, knowledge and more — in one puja.
The kalasha Devi
A kalasha filled with rice, coins and betel is dressed in a silk sari and jewellery, and a silver face of the Devi is fixed on it. It feels like a guest has come home.
Friends and tamboola
In the evening women visit each other’s homes for arishina-kumkuma and tamboola — the social heart of the habba.
Charumati’s dream
Who is in it: Charumati, Varamahalakshmi, Shiva and Parvati
Parvati once asked Shiva which vrata brings the most good to a family. Shiva told her the story of Charumati.
Charumati lived in Kundinapura and cared for her husband and his parents with great devotion. One night Lakshmi appeared to her in a dream and asked her to worship her on the Friday before Shravana Hunnime.
Charumati told her neighbours, and together they kept the vrata. As they walked around the kalasha, it is told, their homes filled with gold and grain.

Keeping the Varamahalakshmi Vrata fast
The day before
- A sattvic meal on Thursday.
On the fasting day
- Many fast until the puja is complete.
Ending the fast
- Eat the naivedya after the puja.
If a full fast is not right for your health, phalahara (fruit and milk) or a single meal keeps the vrata just as truly. Ask your elders or our pandit.
Good practice, and what to avoid
Please do
- Welcome every woman who visits with tamboola.
- Keep the puja place lit through the day.
Best avoided
- Leave the kalasha unattended near lamps.

Have the Varamahalakshmi Vrata puja done for you
Two ways to do it. At a temple: the pandit takes your family’s name and gotra in the sankalpa and sends you the photos and video. At home: a pandit from our panel comes to you with the vidhi, and you sit for the puja yourself.
Where this comes from
- Skanda Purana tradition for the Varalakshmi vrata and the story of Charumati.
- Karnataka household practice of the kalasha Devi and tamboola.
How we work out the dates: Stuti Mandir’s own panchanga engine places the Sun and Moon (Lahiri ayanamsa) and checks the tithi against sunrise, sunset and moonrise in Bengaluru, in IST. A printed panchanga may differ by a minute or so. Where your family’s panchanga or your purohita says otherwise, go with them.
Questions devotees ask us
When is Varamahalakshmi Vrata 2027?
Friday, 13 August 2027. In Bengaluru, Sravana Shukla Dwadashi (amanta; Shravan Shukla Dwadashi in the North Indian count) begins Fri, 13 Aug, 03:00 AM and ends Sat, 14 Aug, 05:22 AM IST.
Will Mysuru and Delhi keep Varamahalakshmi Vrata on the same day?
Mostly yes. But the sun rises and sets at different times in different towns, and a habba is kept on the day its tithi is running at the right hour — so timings shift, and once in a while the date does too. Change the town above to see yours.
What if Hunnime itself falls on a Friday?
The vrata is kept on the Friday before it — a week earlier. The date above follows that rule.
Can a pandit do it at home?
Yes — book Varamahalakshmi vrata with a Stuti Mandir pandit.
