Krishna was born in Mathura and grew up across the Yamuna in Gokul and Vrindavan. The Braj region holds thousands of shrines.

The Bhagavata Purana, Harivamsha and Vishnu Purana set Krishna's birth in Mathura and his childhood in Gokul, Vrindavan and around Govardhan hill.
