Frequently asked questions

What is a panchang?

A panchang is the Hindu almanac for a day. Its five limbs (pancha anga) are the tithi (lunar day), vaara (weekday), nakshatra (the Moon’s star), yoga and karana; together with sunrise, sunset and the muhurtams they are used to choose times for pujas, vrats and new beginnings.

Why does the panchang change with the city?

The day in a panchang runs from sunrise to sunrise, and Rahu Kalam, Abhijit and the other muhurtams are divisions of the local daylight and night. Sunrise differs across India by more than an hour, so these times are calculated for the city you choose.

What are Rahu Kalam, Yamaganda and Gulika?

Each is one-eighth of the daytime, falling in a fixed part of the day for each weekday. Traditionally new work, journeys and auspicious ceremonies are not begun during them.

How is this panchang calculated?

From the positions of the Sun and Moon computed for the chosen date and city, with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa used by Indian civil panchangs, in IST. Printed panchangs may differ by a minute or two.
