Kamakhya

One of the most revered Shakti Peethas, where tradition says the yoni of Sati fell. The present temple was rebuilt by the Koch kings in 1565.

Sacred origin

[Traditional account]

When Shiva carried Sati's body in grief, Vishnu's discus divided it and the places where the parts fell became Shakti Peethas. The Kalika Purana says her yoni fell at Kamakhya; there is no image, only a natural rock cleft fed by a spring.

Documented history

[Archaeological evidence]

The temple was rebuilt in 1565 under the Koch king Nara Narayana, with his brother Chilarai; the Ahom kings later added to it.
