Mount Kailasa

Revered as Shiva's home by Hindus and sacred also to Buddhists, Jains and Bon followers. Pilgrims walk around it — no one climbs it.

In the tradition

[Traditional account]

Shiva and Parvati dwell on Kailasa; Lake Manasarovar below is said to have been created in Brahma's mind. Four great rivers rise near it: the Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra and Karnali.

Pilgrimage

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra includes a parikrama of about 52 km around the mountain.
