What Vasant Panchami means
First letters
Vasant Panchami is a favoured day for Aksharabhyasam (Vidyarambha): the child writes “Om” and the first letters in rice, guided by a pandit.
Yellow
Mustard fields bloom in the North; people wear yellow and cook yellow sweet rice (kesari bhaat).
An abujh muhurat
Many families hold weddings, griha pravesh or new ventures on Vasant Panchami without a separate muhurat.
Saraswati gives the world its voice
Who is in it: Brahma, Saraswati
When Brahma had made the world, he looked at it and found it lifeless — there was no sound, no speech, no music.
He sprinkled water from his kamandalu, and a radiant goddess appeared, holding a veena, a book and a rosary.
She began to play. Rivers began to murmur, birds to sing, and people to speak.
Brahma named her Saraswati, goddess of speech and learning, and the day of her appearance came to be celebrated as Vasant Panchami.

Getting ready
- 1Bathe, wear yellow or white, and clean the study or puja corner.
The puja
- 1Place Saraswati’s picture or idol on a yellow cloth.
- 2Keep books, pens, notebooks and musical instruments before her; do not study or write with them until the puja is done.
- 3Worship with yellow flowers, akshata, sandal, lamp and incense.
- 4Offer kesari bhaat, boondi or yellow sweets and fruits like ber (jujube).
- 5For small children, do Aksharabhyasam: write “Om” in rice with the child’s finger.
