What Sharad Purnima means

Ko jagarti — who is awake?

The Kojagari name comes from the belief that Lakshmi walks the earth on this night and asks who is awake. Families keep the lamps lit and stay up, so that she finds the house ready.

Kheer in the moonlight

Rice cooked in milk is left in the open under the full moon, covered with a fine cloth, and shared as prasada in the morning. Ayurveda traditions call it cooling after the heat of the rains.

The Maha Raas

The Bhagavata Purana places Krishna’s Raas Lila with the gopis on an autumn full-moon night, which Vaishnava families remember on Sharad Purnima.

Kumara Purnima

In Odisha, unmarried girls worship the Moon for a good husband; in Mithila the newly married keep Kojagara with paan and makhana.

The sister who kept the full-moon vrata

Who is in it: A merchant’s two daughters, The younger sister’s child

A merchant had two daughters who both kept the full-moon fast. The elder kept it completely, with the evening puja; the younger always broke it halfway.

The younger sister’s children did not live long. A learned man told her it was because her vratas were left incomplete.

When her next child was born and did not survive, she laid him on a low seat, covered him, and called her sister to sit there.

As the elder sister was about to sit, her clothes brushed the child — and he began to cry. Her complete vrata had given her that power.

From then on the younger sister kept the Purnima vrata fully, and she told everyone in the town to do the same.

What it teaches: A vrata begun should be finished — whatever its size.

Have the Sharad Purnima puja done for you

Two ways to do it. At a temple: the pandit takes your family’s name and gotra in the sankalpa and sends you the photos and video. At home: a pandit from our panel comes to you with the vidhi, and you sit for the puja yourself.

Where this comes from

  • Bhagavata Purana, Skandha 10, for the Raas Lila.
  • Kojagara vrata as given in Bengali and Mithila vrata collections.

How we work out the dates: Stuti Mandir’s own panchanga engine places the Sun and Moon (Lahiri ayanamsa) and checks the tithi against sunrise, sunset and moonrise in Bengaluru, in IST. A printed panchanga may differ by a minute or so. Where your family’s panchanga or your purohita says otherwise, go with them.

Can a pandit do Lakshmi puja at home on Sharad Purnima?
