What is Birthday Pooja?
A Birthday Pooja (Ayushya Pooja) is done on the birth nakshatra or birthday with Ganapati pooja, Navagraha pooja and Ayushya sooktam, praying for health, long life and success in the year ahead.
Traditionally the birthday is kept by the birth nakshatra in the birth month (janma nakshatra), not the calendar date. Many families add an Ayush Homam for children’s first birthday (Abdapoorthi) or Mrityunjaya japam for elders.
