Questions devotees ask us

Which panchanga does this follow?

The Chandramana (amanta) panchanga used across Karnataka: each lunar month ends on Amavasya, and the year begins on Ugadi. The North Indian (purnimanta) month name is shown alongside for families who follow it.

Why do the times change from city to city?

A panchanga day runs from one sunrise to the next, and Rahu Kala, Abhijit and the other hours are portions of the local day and night. Sunrise in Mangaluru and in Kalaburagi can differ by several minutes, so every time here is worked out for the city you pick.

What should I avoid during Rahu Kala?

Families traditionally avoid beginning something new — a journey, a purchase, a ceremony or signing papers — during Rahu Kala, Yamaganda and Gulika. Daily prayers and work already under way carry on as usual.

Which hour is best for a new beginning?

Abhijit, around midday, is considered good for most beginnings, and Brahma Muhurta before dawn for prayer and study. For griha pravesha, a wedding or naming, ask a pandit to fix a muhurta for your family’s stars.

How accurate are these timings?

They are calculated from the Sun and Moon positions for the chosen date and place, using the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa followed by Indian almanacs, in IST. A printed panchanga may differ by a minute or two.
