What Ahoi Ashtami means
Four days after Karwa Chauth
Karwa Chauth is for the husband; Ahoi Ashtami, the same fortnight, is for the children. Many women keep both.
The syahu
Ahoi Mata is drawn with a syahu (porcupine) and her seven cubs, from the story of the mother who hurt them by accident.
The silver syau
Some families string silver beads or a small silver Ahoi pendant (syau) on a thread, adding a bead for each child, and wear it until Deepavali.
The mother and the syahu’s cubs
Who is in it: A moneylender’s wife, The syahu (porcupine), Ahoi Mata
Before Deepavali a moneylender’s wife went to the forest to dig soil to plaster her house. Her spade struck a syahu’s den and killed one of its cubs.
The grieving syahu cursed her. Within the year her seven sons died one after another.
Crushed, she told the elder women of the village. They told her to fast on Ashtami, draw the syahu and her cubs, and pray to Ahoi Mata for forgiveness.
She kept the fast for seven years, serving cows and holy people. Pleased, Ahoi Mata returned her sons.

Have the Ahoi Ashtami puja done for you
Two ways to do it. At a temple: the pandit takes your family’s name and gotra in the sankalpa and sends you the photos and video. At home: a pandit from our panel comes to you with the vidhi, and you sit for the puja yourself.
Where this comes from
- Ahoi Ashtami vrat katha as told in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.
How we work out the dates: Stuti Mandir’s own panchanga engine places the Sun and Moon (Lahiri ayanamsa) and checks the tithi against sunrise, sunset and moonrise in Delhi, in IST. A printed panchanga may differ by a minute or so. Where your family’s panchanga or your purohita says otherwise, go with them.
Questions devotees ask us
When is Ahoi Ashtami 2026?
Sunday, 1 November 2026. In Delhi, Aswayuja Krishna Ashtami (amanta; Kartik Krishna Ashtami in the North Indian count) begins Sun, 1 Nov, 02:52 PM and ends Mon, 2 Nov, 01:11 PM IST.
Will Mysuru and Delhi keep Ahoi Ashtami on the same day?
Mostly yes. But the sun rises and sets at different times in different towns, and a habba is kept on the day its tithi is running at the right hour — so timings shift, and once in a while the date does too. Change the town above to see yours.
Do you break the Ahoi Ashtami fast on seeing the stars or the moon?
Most families break it on seeing the stars at dusk; the moon rises late on this Ashtami, so only some families wait for it. Follow your family custom.
Can fathers keep Ahoi Ashtami?
Yes. Traditionally mothers keep it, but many parents now fast together.
