What is Karwa Chauth Puja?
The fast is a nirjala (waterless) vrata kept from sunrise to moonrise. Before dawn the mother-in-law gives sargi — food eaten before sunrise — and in the evening women gather for the puja with karwas filled with water or grain.
The katha of Queen Veeravati is told, the karwas are exchanged in a circle (pheri), and when the moon rises the wife sees it through a sieve, offers arghya and breaks the fast from her husband’s hands.
The story of Karwa Chauth Puja
About this puja
Karwa Chauth is a North Indian vrata: married women fast without water from sunrise until moonrise on the Chaturthi after Aswayuja Hunnime. In the evening they worship Karwa Mata, Shiva-Parvati and Ganesha, hear the katha with the karwa pot, and end the fast when the moon comes up.
The moon is seen through a sieve, and the first sip of water comes from the husband's hand.
