What is Mangala Gowri Vratham?
Gowri is worshipped as Mangala Gowri — the auspicious one. On each Tuesday of Shravana the young wife worships her with sixteen kinds of offerings (shodasha), sixteen-strand thread and a lamp of sixteen wicks, then reads the vrata katha.
In the first year the vrata is often done at the bride’s parents’ home, with married women invited for tamboolam. The pandit helps the family perform it correctly the first time.
