What Hanuman Jayanti means

One Hanuman, several days

North India celebrates on Chaitra Purnima, Tamil Nadu in Margazhi on Moola nakshatra, Telugu states on Vaisakha Krishna Dashami, and Karnataka keeps Hanumad Vrata on Margashira Shukla Trayodashi.

Sindoor

Hanuman covered himself in sindoor when he learned that Sita wore it for Rama’s long life — so sindoor in jasmine oil is his favourite offering.

The child who leapt for the Sun

Who is in it: Anjana, Vayu, Hanuman, Indra, Surya

Anjana, an apsara born as a vanara, prayed to Shiva for a son; Vayu, the wind god, carried the blessing to her, and Hanuman was born.

One morning the hungry baby saw the rising Sun and, thinking it a ripe fruit, leapt into the sky to eat it.

Indra struck him with his thunderbolt to stop him; it hit the child’s jaw — hanu — and he fell.

Vayu, in grief, withdrew the air from all the worlds. The gods hurried to revive the child and each gave him a boon — strength, wisdom, immortality.

What it teaches: Great strength serves best when given to a great cause — as Hanuman gave his to Rama.

Have the Hanuman Jayanti puja done for you

Two ways to do it. At a temple: the pandit takes your family’s name and gotra in the sankalpa and sends you the photos and video. At home: a pandit from our panel comes to you with the vidhi, and you sit for the puja yourself.

    Where this comes from

    • Valmiki Ramayana, Kishkindha Kanda, sarga 66, for Hanuman’s birth.

How we work out the dates: Stuti Mandir’s own panchanga engine places the Sun and Moon (Lahiri ayanamsa) and checks the tithi against sunrise, sunset and moonrise in Delhi, in IST. A printed panchanga may differ by a minute or so. Where your family’s panchanga or your purohita says otherwise, go with them.

    Questions devotees ask us

    When is Hanuman Jayanti 2027?

Tuesday, 20 April 2027. In Delhi, Chaitra Purnima (amanta; Chaitra Purnima in the North Indian count) begins Tue, 20 Apr, 04:52 AM and ends Wed, 21 Apr, 03:57 AM IST.

Will Mysuru and Delhi keep Hanuman Jayanti on the same day?

Mostly yes. But the sun rises and sets at different times in different towns, and a habba is kept on the day its tithi is running at the right hour — so timings shift, and once in a while the date does too. Change the town above to see yours.

Why are there different Hanuman Jayanti dates?

Regions follow different traditions of his birth: Chaitra Purnima in the North, Vaisakha in the Telugu states, Margazhi in Tamil Nadu, and Hanumad Vrata in Karnataka.

Can I book a Sundarkand or Hanuman Chalisa path?

Yes. Book a Sundarkand path or Hanuman Chalisa path with a Stuti Mandir pandit at home or on live video.
