What is Upanayanam?
Upanayanam is the sacred thread ceremony in which a boy receives the yajnopavitam and the Gayatri mantra from his father, beginning his life as a student (brahmacharya) of the Vedas.
The word means “leading near” — to the guru and to knowledge. After the Udakashanti and the boy’s last meal with his mother (matru bhojanam), he wears the sacred thread, receives the Gayatri mantra (Brahmopadesam) and performs his first sandhya vandanam and samidadhanam.
