What Kanakadasa Jayanti means
The poet
Born Thimmappa Nayaka at Bada in today’s Haveri district, he was a chieftain and soldier before turning to devotion. His works include Mohana Tarangini, Nala Charitre, Haribhakti Sara and Ramadhanya Charitre.
The Haridasa
A disciple of Vyasatirtha, he sang in plain Kannada so that anyone could follow. His songs end with the signature “Kaginele Adikeshava”, the deity of Kaginele.
Kanakana Kindi
At the Udupi Krishna Matha, a small window called Kanakana Kindi marks the place where, it is told, Krishna turned to give darshan to Kanakadasa when he was kept outside.
The question of equality
Ramadhanya Charitre tells of a quarrel between rice and ragi — the grain of the rich and the grain of the poor — and Rama’s judgement for ragi. It is still read as a call to judge people by their worth, not their birth.
The window at Udupi
Who is in it: Kanakadasa, Sri Krishna of Udupi, Vadiraja Tirtha, Vyasatirtha
After years as a disciple of Vyasatirtha in Vijayanagara, Kanakadasa travelled to Udupi to see Sri Krishna.
Because of his birth, he was not allowed into the temple. He did not argue. He went round to the back wall, sat in a small hut, and sang to Krishna through the stone.
One of his songs — “Baagilanu teredu seveyanu kodu Hariye”, open the door and let me serve you, Hari — is said to have been sung there.
It is told that the wall cracked, and the idol of Krishna turned to the west so that Kanakadasa could see him. To this day Udupi Krishna faces west, and the window is called Kanakana Kindi.

- Karnataka government records of the Kanakadasa Jayanti holiday.
- Udupi Sri Krishna Matha tradition for the Kanakana Kindi.
How we work out the dates: Stuti Mandir’s own panchanga engine places the Sun and Moon (Lahiri ayanamsa) and checks the tithi against sunrise, sunset and moonrise in Bengaluru, in IST. A printed panchanga may differ by a minute or so. Where your family’s panchanga or your purohita says otherwise, go with them.
