What is Dhanteras Puja?
Dhanvantari emerged from the churning of the ocean on this day, so it is also Dhanvantari Jayanti, the day of health. In the evening, during pradosha kaal, Lakshmi and Kubera are worshipped for prosperity, often with the newly bought gold or utensils placed before them.
A lamp facing south — the Yama deepam — is lit at the entrance at night, a prayer to Yama for the protection of the family from untimely death.

In Karnataka the same evening is Neeru tumbuva habba, when the bath vessel is filled for the morning.
