About Upanayanam (Thread Ceremony)
About this puja
Upanayana is the thread ceremony: the boy receives the yajnopavita and, from his father, the Gayatri mantra, and begins his life as a student of the Vedas. The word means “leading near” — to the guru and to learning.
After Udakashanti and a last meal from his mother's plate (matru bhojana), the boy wears the sacred thread, receives Brahmopadesha, and does his first sandhyavandane and samidadhana.
