About Bhoomi Pooja (Sankusthapana)
About this puja
Bhoomi Pooja (Sankusthapana) is performed on a plot before construction begins, to worship Bhoomi Devi (Mother Earth) and the Vastu Purusha, seek permission to dig, and lay the foundation stone at an auspicious muhurtham.
Before the earth is dug, tradition asks the family to honour Bhoomi Devi and the Vastu Purusha and to cleanse the plot of past influences. The first digging and the foundation stones (shila nyasam) are placed at the muhurtham, usually in the north-east (eeshanya) corner.
