About Maha Mrityunjaya Homam
About this puja
Maha Mrityunjaya Homam is a fire ritual to Lord Shiva with the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra (“Om Tryambakam yajamahe…”, Rig Veda 7.59.12), performed for health, recovery from illness, protection from untimely death and long life.
The mantra addresses Shiva as the three-eyed one who frees us from death as easily as a ripe cucumber falls from its vine. The homam combines japa of the mantra — often 1,008 times or more — with offerings into the fire, and the sanctified water is sprinkled on the person for whom it is done.
